F.U. To... The Pay Gap

Gaps. For some reason, us women always seem to come head to head with gaps. For a while it was the gap between our teeth, which Georgia May Jagger championed into trend… then it was that thigh-gap obsession, which seems to be dying down, thank fuck. Leaving us with one gap that just won’t seem to level itself out. The gender pay gap.

Australia’s current national gender pay gap is 14.6%. And while that’s the lowest it’s been in 20 years (do we even celebrate that?) we’d sure as hell prefer to close it up to that rounded, voluptuous, sexy 0%.

In the past two decades the gap has hovered between 15% and 19% across the board, but when we take a look at just the full-time gap, we’re looking at a current difference of 21.3%. That means men working full-time earn nearly $27,000 more a year than women working full time. I’m sorry, WHAT!? That’s a freakin car. A really fucking nice one too.

To top it off, data from both the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Workplace Gender Equality Agency show gender pay gaps in every single industry and occupation in Australia. Dead. Fucking. Serious.

Picked straight from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, these are the known causes of the gender pay gap:

  • discrimination and bias in hiring and pay decisions
  • women and men working in different industries and different jobs, with female-dominated industries and jobs attracting lower wages
  • women’s disproportionate share of unpaid caring and domestic work
  • lack of workplace flexibility to accommodate caring and other responsibilities, especially in senior roles
  • women’s greater time out of the workforce impacting career progression and opportunities.

And while these all suck – big time – what really packs a punch is the fact that key reasons relate to our composition, physicality and maternal purpose. We are penalized on our natural role as women to carry and care for children – and held accountable even if our bodies don’t allow us to do so (or if we choose otherwise).

Change is happening babe, but clearly not at the rate it should. So it’s important AF that while we say F.U. to the pay gap, we step up and make shit happen – for ourselves and for our fellow femmes.

Forget #girlboss… you’re a straight up BOSS. Know your strengths, acknowledge them, and speak on them. Prove your worth. And don’t back down.
